How to Install the Lock
What's in the box

What you'll need

Step 1. Prepare your existing deadbolt
Use the supplied adhesive strip to hold the keyed side of the lock in place.
Step 2. Remove your existing thumb-latch
Unscrew and remove the screws from your existing deadbolt thumbturn. If there is an additional back plate, remove that as well. Be sure to position the thumbturn so that you can access both screws so that you can entirely remove the thumbturn.
Step 3. Prepare the Mounting Plate*
The included mounting plate has two adjustable screw-holes that can be repositioned as needed. Remove the screws from the thumb-latch and insert them into the front of the mounting plate.
*Optional: Affix the included cover plate behind the mounting plate if there is a gap behind the mounting plate due to a large bore hole.

Step 4. Attach the Mounting Plate
Tighten the screws by hand until the mounting plate is settled securely against the door. PLEASE NOTE: Over-tightening the screws may lead to issues over time. Additional guidance is available here.

Step 5. Attach the Correct Adapter
Place the correct adapter onto the tail piece. One of the triangle shaped nubs should face up if you have the correct adapter.

How to choose your adapter:

Step 6. Open the wing latches
Pull out both side wing latches to prepare for mounting.

Step 7. Attach the Wi-Fi Smart Lock
Slide your smart lock over the adapter and attach it to the mounting plate. Make sure the back of the lock is flush with the door and the outer ring is in the correct orientation relative to your deadbolt.
To secure the lock, clamp down both wing latches to the mounting plate completely.
Lock and unlock the door by turning the outer ring to make sure everything is moving smoothly.

Step 8. Remove the faceplate
Press down on the August logo located at the bottom of the face plate. Grab the top of the faceplate and remove it.

Step 9. Remove the battery tab
While holding the batteries in place, remove the plastic battery isolation tab. Make sure that the battery is properly seated in its compartment.

Step 10. Replace the faceplate
Place the faceplate back onto the Smart Lock, with the August logo at the bottom

DoorSense™ Installation
This guide will walk you through the steps of installing DoorSense™ for the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock.
August provides two options for installing DoorSense™: Surface Mount and Flush Mount. How you install DoorSense™ is up to you.
Surface Mount | Flush Mount |
The DoorSense™ will come partially assembled for the surface mount installation with the magnet enclosure inside the housing and you will only need a screwdriver for this installation.
Step 1. Determine mounting location
For optimal performance, DoorSense™ should be mounted within 1 to 1.5 inches from the edge of your door frame, and within 1.5 inches from the bottom of the extended deadbolt.
PLEASE NOTE: If you do not have a flat door frame or you have a perpendicular wall directly next to your door, the DoorSense™ can be alternatively installed on the perpendicular wall. The deadbolt should still be used as a guide for the recommended height of the DoorSense™ installation.

Step 2. Attach mounting tape
Remove one side of the adhesive backing. Attach to the back of your DoorSense™, making sure to align the edges and screw holes. Remove the other side of the adhesive backing.
Step 3. Place on door frame
Press the adhesive side of the DoorSense™ on your frame in the proper identified mounting position. Make sure to align the pill shape vertically.
Step 4. Screw into frame
Hand tighten your DoorSense™ to the frame using the included screws.
PLEASE NOTE: You may wish to complete this step until after your lock is set up and calibrated to ensure that you are able to retrieve accurate door state readings before modifying your door frame.
Step 5. Attach the cover
Press the cover onto the DoorSense™ unit.
Step 6. Calibrate your Lock
Once the lock is set up, navigate to the Lock Settings and select Calibrate Lock and select LOCK AND DOORSENSE™. Follow the instructions in the app until you have successfully calibrated your August Wi-Fi Smart Lock and DoorSense™ together.
Open and close the door and validate that the door state is accurate. If it is not accurate or the calibration was unsuccessful, relocate the DoorSense™ housing closer to the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock and go through the calibration process again until you get accurate results.
If you elected to not insert the screws into the door frame, go back and insert the screws into the housing and secure them into your door frame or wall and place the cover over the housing.
If you notice that your readings are not accurate over time, perform another Door State Calibration to see improved performance.
Flush Mount Installation
Flush mount installation of DoorSense™ makes the unit less visible because it is installed inside your door frame. A drill and a ⅝” drill bit is needed for flush mount installation.
PLEASE NOTE: If your door frame is hollow metal, a surface mount installation is the recommended installation method. If you still choose to flush mount the DoorSense™ unit on a hollow metal door frame, take extreme care not to drill the hole too large as the magnet may fall inside your door frame.
Step 1. Remove magnet from housing
For flush mount installation, remove the magnet carrier from the DoorSense™ housing. This can be done using a small blunt object to push the magnet carrier from the housing through the center hole. This may require some force.

Step 2. Affix magnet to cap
Expose the adhesive by removing the blue backing. Press the cap onto the notched side of the magnet carrier. The two shapes should interlock.

Step 3. Determine mounting location
DoorSense™ will be flush mounted into the frame of your door, so your Smart Lock swings away when the door is opened.
DoorSense™ should be mounted no more than 1 to 1.5 inches from the edge of your deadbolt strike plate, centered on the frame.

Step 4. Tape drill bit
It may be helpful to attach tape to your drill bit to mark the proper depth of hole to drill. DoorSense™ requires a 1/2 inch deep hole, but it may help to use the assembled DoorSense™ as a guide.
Step 5. Drill hole
Drill the hole in the proper location on your door frame, keeping the drill straight and steady.

Step 6. Insert DoorSense™ into hole
Insert the DoorSense™ into the hole. If it is too snug to insert by hand, protect the unit with a piece of scrap wood and lightly tap the unit into place with a hammer or mallet.

Congratulations! This completes DoorSense™ installation. If you notice that your readings are inaccurate over time, perform another Door State Calibration to improve performance.
