Wi-Fi Smart Lock
To replace batteries for August Wi-Fi Smart Locks:
- Press down on the August logo located at the bottom of the face plate. The top of the face plate will tilt outward. Grab the faceplate to remove it from the lock.
❗Your August Wi-Fi Smart Lock has 2 3V CR123 or CR123A Lithium batteries. It is important to replace both batteries at the same time. We do not recommend using rechargeable batteries because of their limited capacity.
If you have replaced the batteries already, yet you are still receiving low-battery alerts, this article provides troubleshooting. - Remove both batteries and replace with 2 standard non-rechargeable CR123 lithium batteries, ensuring the positive (+) ends are pointing up. After you replace both batteries you will see the Smart Lock blink green twice, followed by a third, longer blink.
- Place the faceplate back onto the August Smart Lock with the August logo oriented at the bottom of the face plate.
- Operate the lock 3 times using the August app.
💡 This will stop false low battery alerts until the next time your batteries reach their 25% capacity.
3rd Generation Smart Lock
To replace batteries for the 3rd generation August Smart Lock:
- Remove the faceplate by sliding the top of the front face upwards to remove the battery compartment cover.
❗Your 3rd Generation Smart Lock has 4 AA batteries. It is important to replace all 4 batteries at the same time. We do not recommend using rechargeable batteries because of their limited capacity.
If you have replaced the batteries already, yet you are still receiving low-battery alerts, this article provides troubleshooting. - Remove all 4 batteries from the battery compartment by pulling the gray tab on the on the top right corner.
- Replace all 4 batteries with standard non-rechargeable alkaline batteries, ensuring the that the battery pull tab is behind the batteries.
Place the bottom 2 batteries with the positive (+) ends to the left, and the top 2 batteries with the positive (+) ends to the right. - After the batteries are inserted, the unit will make a slight beeping noise upon its initial power up.
- Place the faceplate back onto the August Smart Lock by sliding it back over the batteries until it clicks into place.
- Operate the lock 3 times using the August app.

Smart Lock Pro or 2nd Generation Smart Lock
To replace batteries for the Smart Lock Pro or 2nd Generation Smart Lock:
- Press down on the August logo located at the bottom of the face plate. The top of the face plate will tilt outward. Grab the faceplate to remove it from the lock.
❗Your Smart Lock has 4 AA batteries. It is important to replace all 4 batteries at the same time. We do not recommend using rechargeable batteries because of their limited capacity.
If you have replaced the batteries already, yet you are still receiving low-battery alerts, this article provides troubleshooting. - Remove all 4 batteries and replace with 4 standard non-rechargeable alkaline batteries, ensuring the positive (+) end is pointing up. Make sure the batteries snap into place, and the light on your Smart Lock flashes green.
- Place the faceplate back onto the August Smart Lock with the August logo oriented at the bottom of the face plate.
- Operate the lock 3 times using the August app.

1st Generation Smart Lock
To replace batteries for the 1st Generation Smart Lock:
- Press on the faceplate and turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove the battery cover.
❗Your Smart Lock has 4 AA batteries. It is important to replace all 4 batteries at the same time. We do not recommend using rechargeable batteries because of their limited capacity.
If you have replaced the batteries already, yet you are still receiving low-battery alerts, this article provides troubleshooting. - Pull the ribbon to remove all 4 AA batteries.
- Replace with 4 new standard non-rechargeable alkaline batteries, positive (+) end up. Make sure the batteries snap into place, and the light on your Smart Lock flashes green.
- Align the faceplate hooks with the August Smart Lock.
- Replace the faceplate and turn clockwise to tighten. The faceplate will lock into place with the August logo oriented at the bottom.
- Operate the lock 3 times using the August app.
