DoorSense™ helps you know that your home is secure by keeping track of whether your door is open or closed. By installing DoorSense, you gain access to:

*   Door Ajar Alerts
*   “Instant” Auto-Lock

Depending on which lock you have, select either: Install with [Wi-Fi Smart Lock](https://august.com/products/august-wifi-smart-lock), Install with [Smart Lock Pro](https://august.com/products/august-smart-lock-pro-connect), Install with [Smart Lock, 3rd Generation](https://august.com/products/august-smart-lock-connect), or Install with [Connected by August / Yale Access Module](https://august.com/pages/connected-by-august) below for directions to install the device with your lock.

There are two ways to install DoorSense: Surface Mount and Flush Mount. If you want to use DoorSense, but prefer not to drill into your doorframe, install Surface Mounted DoorSense using the 3M mounting tape only.

**PLEASE NOTE: The DoorSense™ installation position depends on the smart lock model. Be sure to select the correct model before installing the sensor.**

### Surface Mount Installation

#### Step 1. Determine mounting location

For optimal performance, DoorSense™ should be mounted within 1 to 1.5 inches from the edge of your door frame, and within 1.5 inches from the bottom of the extended deadbolt.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not have a flat door frame or you have a perpendicular wall directly next to your door, the DoorSense™ can be alternatively installed on the perpendicular wall. The deadbolt should still be used as a guide for the recommended height of the DoorSense™ installation.

![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/d8ba5287d8073948390fe83e9cff673a.jpg)

#### Step 2. Attach mounting tape

Remove one side of the adhesive backing. Attach to the back of your DoorSense™, making sure to align the edges and screw holes. Remove the other side of the adhesive backing.

![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/60b37d8d7021a41856ccec8b7edc2e62.jpg)

#### Step 3. Place on door frame

Press the adhesive side of the DoorSense™ on your frame in the proper identified mounting position. Make sure to align the pill shape vertically.

![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/584ee5f609d1119f20d437400f14afd3.jpg)

#### Step 4. Screw into frame

Hand tighten your DoorSense™ to the frame using the included screws.

PLEASE NOTE: You may wish to complete this step until after your lock is set up and calibrated to ensure that you are able to retrieve accurate door state readings before modifying your door frame.

![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/dc7b8c5474da33b023361432e297ec61.jpg)

#### Step 5. Attach the cover

Press the cover onto the DoorSense™ unit.

![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/e28e9030280f543cb0df1ba1879c78f8.jpg)

#### Step 6. Calibrate your Lock

Once the lock is set up, navigate to the Lock Settings and select Calibrate Lock and select LOCK AND DOORSENSE™. Follow the instructions in the app until you have successfully calibrated your August Wi-Fi Smart Lock and DoorSense™ together.

Open and close the door and validate that the door state is accurate. If it is not accurate or the calibration was unsuccessful, relocate the DoorSense™ housing closer to the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock and go through the calibration process again until you get accurate results.

If you elected to not insert the screws into the door frame, go back and insert the screws into the housing and secure them into your door frame or wall and place the cover over the housing.

If you notice that your readings are not accurate over time, perform another Door State Calibration to see improved performance.

[](#flush-mount-wi-fi)

### Flush Mount Installation

Flush mount installation of DoorSense™ makes the unit less visible because it is installed inside your door frame. A drill and a ⅝” drill bit is needed for flush mount installation.

![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/33d7e75baf2800511ac0bc1b4b67c193.jpg)

PLEASE NOTE: If your door frame is hollow metal, a surface mount installation is the recommended installation method. If you still choose to flush mount the DoorSense™ unit on a hollow metal door frame, take extreme care not to drill the hole too large as the magnet may fall inside your door frame.

#### Step 1. Remove magnet from housing

For flush mount installation, remove the magnet carrier from the DoorSense™ housing. This can be done using a small blunt object to push the magnet carrier from the housing through the center hole. This may require some force.

![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/87f48f0d165ecfa8d7fade64ec25559f.jpg)

#### Step 2. Affix magnet to cap

Expose the adhesive by removing the blue backing. Press the cap onto the notched side of the magnet carrier. The two shapes should interlock.

![remove magnet from housing](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/4e9868355145875fffd55b3dcce46c15.jpg)

#### Step 3. Determine mounting location

DoorSense™ will be flush mounted into the frame of your door, so your Smart Lock swings away when the door is opened.

DoorSense™ should be mounted no more than1 to 1.5 inches from the edge of your deadbolt strike plate, centered on the frame.

![determine mounting location flush mount](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/71baa952877df7fc458906c6177586e6.jpg)

#### Step 4. Tape drill bit

It may be helpful to attach tape to your drill bit to mark the proper depth of hole to drill. DoorSense™ requires a 1/2 inch deep hole, but it may help to use the assembled DoorSense™ as a guide.

![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/7be3441ccd122b3ed6278856470be3f0.jpg)

#### Step 5. Drill hole

Drill the hole in the proper location on your door frame, keeping the drill straight and steady.

![drill hole](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/830c8dc9b7e359cb90e11425338ad6e4.jpg)

#### Step 6. Insert DoorSense™ into hole

Insert the DoorSense™ into the hole. If it is too snug to insert by hand, protect the unit with a piece of scrap wood and lightly tap the unit into place with a hammer or mallet.

![push doorsense into hole](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/e1e367863207e7bbb2a77fce498e6dfa.jpg)

Congratulations! This completes DoorSense™ installation. If you notice that your readings are inaccurate over time, perform another Door State Calibration to improve performance.

## DoorSense™ Installation - Connected by August / Yale Access

DoorSense™ allows you to detect if your door is open or closed.

First, decide how you would like to install the DoorSense™. August provides two options for installation: a surface mount and a flush mount installation. The surface mount installation requires the use of a screwdriver only. The flush mount installation will provide a cleaner and less visible look with more robust performance, but does require drilling a ⅝” hole into your door frame.

#### Step 6. Calibrate your Lock

Once the lock is set up, navigate to the Lock Settings and select Calibrate Lock and select LOCK AND DOORSENSE™. Follow the instructions in the app until you have successfully calibrated your August Smart Lock and DoorSense™ together.

Open and close the door and validate that the door state is accurate. If it is not accurate or the calibration was unsuccessful, relocate the DoorSense™ housing closer to the smart lock and go through the calibration process again until you get accurate results.

If you elected to not insert the screws into the door frame, go back and insert the screws into the housing and secure them into your door frame or wall and place the cover over the housing.

If you notice that your readings are not accurate over time, perform another Door State Calibration to see improved performance.

#### Step 3. Mount in the frame

DoorSense™ will be flush mounted into the frame of your door, so your smart lock swings away when the door is opened.  DoorSense should align with the lock’s Connected by August / Yale Access module.

#### Step 4. Determine mounting location

Hand tighten your DoorSense™ to the frame using the included screws.

DoorSense™ should be mounted between 1.5” and 3.5” from the top edge of your deadbolt strike plate, centered on the frame. DoorSense™ should align with the lock’s Connected by August / Yale Access module (see image above for guidance).

#### Step 5. Tape drill bit

It may be helpful to attach tape to your drill bit to mark the proper depth of hole to drill. DoorSense™ requires a 1/2 inch deep hole, but it may help to use the assembled DoorSense™ as a guide.

#### Step 6. Drill hole

Drill the hole in the proper location on your door frame, keeping the drill straight and steady.

#### Step 7. Insert DoorSense into hole

Insert the DoorSense™ into the hole. If it is too snug to push in by hand, you can protect the frame with a piece of scrap wood and use light blows with a hammer or mallet.

#### Step 8. Calibrate your Lock

Once the lock is set up, navigate to the Lock Settings and select Calibrate Lock and select LOCK AND DOORSENSE™. Follow the instructions in the app until you have successfully calibrated your August Smart Lock and DoorSense together.

Open and close the door and validate that the door state is accurate. If it is not accurate or the calibration was unsuccessful, relocate the DoorSense housing closer to the August Smart Lock and go through the calibration process again until you get accurate results.

If you elected to not insert the screws into the door frame, go back and insert the screws into the housing and secure them into your door frame or wall and place the cover over the housing.

If you notice that your readings are not accurate over time, perform another Door State Calibration to see improved performance.

#### Troubleshooting DoorSense™

August’s DoorSense™ technology uses magnetic fields to help determine the state of your door as open or closed. Therefore any changes to the magnetic field surrounding the lock may affect the accuracy of the DoorSense™ readings. This can include removing and replacing the front faceplate or bringing another magnet into the range of the lock.

If you notice that your door state is inaccurate, you should go into your Lock Settings and Calibrate your Lock and DoorSense™.
