Prepare your existing deadbolt Use the supplied adhesive strip to hold the keyed side of the lock in place. ![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/15b2164f2683b27402bb624f38d9a4bd.jpg) #### 2\. Remove your existing thumbturn Unscrew and remove the screws from your existing deadbolt thumbturn. If there is an additional back plate, remove that as well. Prepare the Mounting Plate The included mounting plate has two adjustable screw-holes that can be repositioned as needed. Choose your adapter Select your adapter depending on the tailpiece shape and orientation of your existing deadbolt. Attach the Correct Adapter Place the correct adapter onto the tailpiece. Rotate the thumbturn Rotate the thumbturn all the way to the locked or unlocked position, which may take some moderate force. The direction you turn depends on which side of the door your deadbolt is on. Attach the August Smart Lock Before placing the August Smart Lock on the door, ensure the thumbturn is in the correct position. Slide the August Smart Lock over the tailpiece and attach it to the mounting plate. Make sure the back of the lock is flush with the door. Remove the battery tab While holding the batteries in place, remove the clear plastic battery isolation tab on the left side. Make sure that the battery is properly seated in its compartment. Install DoorSense™ DoorSense™ enables your lock to know when the door is open and closed. For DoorSense™ installation instructions, select the [DoorSense™ Installation tab](#top-menu) above to get started. ## Setting up in the App Download and install the August Home app. Select "Get Started" from the home screen, or, if already logged in to the app, select "Set Up a Lock" from the main menu. If you want to enable door ajar notifications, install DoorSense™ next. ## DoorSense™ Installation DoorSense™ technology uses magnetic fields to help determine the state of your door as open or closed. More information about how DoorSense™ is available [here](https://support.august.com/what-is-doorsensetm-Hk4vL1A_z). This guide provides steps for installing DoorSense™ for the 3rd Generation Smart Lock. If you need steps to install DoorSense™ on Smart Lock Pro, instructions are located under the DoorSense Installation tab of [this guide](https://support.august.com/install-smart-lock-pro-3rd-gen-technology-Hy7eDIy0Of). First, decide how you would like to install DoorSense™. There are two options for installation: a surface mount and a flush mount installation.  ![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/d3db27733ce8ab730f0c4cb37194619c.jpeg) The surface mount installation requires the use of only a screwdriver to install, or if you would prefer to avoid making holes in your door frame, it can be installed using only the double-sided tape provided.  The flush mount installation offers a cleaner and less visible look with more robust performance, but does require drilling a 5/8" hole into your door frame. #### Jump to: [Surface Mount Installation](#surface_mount_install) [Flush Mount Installation](#flush_mount_install) ### ### Surface Mount Installation For the surface mount configuration, the only tool needed is a screwdriver.  Surface mount installation uses the oval-shaped DoorSense™ housing and cover and the device is installed on the door frame. Determine mounting location For optimal performance, DoorSense™ should be mounted within 1.5 inches from the edge of your door frame, and within 1.5 inches from the bottom of the extended deadbolt. NOTE: If you do not have a flat door frame or you have a perpendicular wall directly next to your door, the DoorSense™ can be alternatively installed on the perpendicular wall. Attach mounting tape Remove one side of the adhesive backing. Attach to the back of your DoorSense™, making sure to align the edges and screw holes. Place on door frame Press the adhesive side of the DoorSense™ on your frame in the proper identified mounting position. Screw into frame (optional) Hand tighten your DoorSense™ to the frame using the included screws. PLEASE NOTE: You may wish to complete this step until after your lock is set up and calibrated to ensure that you are able to retrieve accurate door state readings before modifying your door frame. ![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/bf8cf55e09531fa23b617eb916557662.jpg) #### 5\. Attach the cover Press the cover onto the DoorSense™ Unit. ![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/f86865a9096eefc84e36b305b6360dcc.jpg) #### 6\. Calibrate your Lock Once the lock is set up, navigate to the Lock Settings and select Calibrate Lock and select LOCK AND DOORSENSE. Follow the instructions in the app until you have successfully calibrated your August Smart Lock and DoorSense™ together. Open and close the door and validate that the door state is accurate. If it is not accurate or the calibration was unsuccessful, relocate the DoorSense™ housing closer to the August Smart Lock and go through the calibration process again until you get accurate results. If you elected to not insert the screws into the door frame, go back and insert the screws into the housing and secure them into your door frame or wall and place the cover over the housing. If you notice that your readings are not accurate over time, perform another Door State Calibration to see improved performance. ![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/b53b6df40a347a5e2fa7aa1ac427fe5d.jpg) ### Flush Mount Installation You will need a drill and a ⅝” drill bit for this installation. If your door frame is hollow metal, a surface mount installation is the preferred method. If you do choose to flush mount the DoorSense™ unit, take extreme care not to drill the hole too large as to let the magnet assembly fall inside. #### What’s in the box ![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/85638c832cf6406416afb5dafae5c868.jpg) #### What you'll need ![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/e9157526bd4b8cfafa50f0b4a77a306b.jpg) #### 1\. Remove magnet from housing For flush mount installation, remove the magnet carrier from the DoorSense™ housing. This can be done using a small blunt object to push the magnet carrier from the housing through the center hole. Affix magnet carrier to circular cap Expose the adhesive by removing the blue backing from the circular DoorSense™ cap. Press the cap onto the notched side of the magnet carrier. Determine mounting location DoorSense™ is flush mounted into the frame of your door, so your Smart Lock swings away when the door is opened. DoorSense™ should be mounted no more than 1.5 inches from the bottom edge of your deadbolt strike plate, centered on the frame. ![](https://cdn.prod2.kustomerhostedcontent.com/media/5f6cab56313fd9001af97923/f6fdc4e6616daabbfe2fb3de741229c6.jpg) #### 4\. Tape drill bit It may be helpful to attach tape to your drill bit to mark the proper depth of hole to drill. Insert DoorSense™ into hole Insert the DoorSense™ into the hole.
