If your lock is jamming, try the following:

  

#### 1\. Are you using the correct adapter?

In order for the lock to perform optimally, an adapter that matches the deadbolt's tailpiece is needed. Refer to the [adapter chart](https://support.august.com/mechanical-issues-SyZXOIFeS) to verify the correct adapter is being used. If you no longer have the needed adapter, you can [purchase a new set online](https://august.com/pages/parts).

  

#### 2\. Does your lock turn in hand?

1.  Remove lock from the mounting plate
2.  Hold your lock in your hand and verify that the lock turns freely and smoothly

3.  While the lock is off the door, recalibrate the lock using the App
    *   **August Smart Lock 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen, and August Smart Lock Pro**: Hold the lock upright in your hand while the lock is recalibrating. This is required because the lock contains a gyroscope.
    *   **August Wi-Fi Smart Lock**: You can lay your lock flat while it is recalibrating. The Wi-Fi Smart Lock does not contain a gyroscope.
4.  Place the lock back on the mounting plate and secure the wing latches
5.  Calibrate the lock again with the door open to ensure the deadbolt is fully extending

#### 3\. Have you tried a motor reset?

If your lock jams when you try to operate it using the App, you may wish to perform a motor reset. A motor reset reorients the lock. Follow the steps below to perform a motor reset on your lock:

1.  Open the wing latches to remove the lock from the mounting plate on the door

2.  With the wing latches open, hold the front of the lock in one hand and rest the wing latches on the back of the lock against the thumb and pinky finger of your other hand
3.  Orient the lock in the unlocked position - with the ridge or bump on the side of the lock at the top or 12 o’clock position  
    💡**_Have an August Wi-Fi Smart Lock?_** Your lock orientation may vary slightly (i.e., 10 o'clock position to 2 o'clock).
4.  Apply some pressure to turn your lock in the opposite direction that it usually turns. The motor will whir if this is done properly. Repeat 1 to 2 times
5.  Finish with the lock in the original 12 o’clock orientation
6.  Replace the lock on the mounting plate, close the wing latches, and recalibrate the lock:
    *   In the August app, tap the **gear icon (****⚙****)** to access **Settings**.
    *   Tap **Lock Settings**.
    *   Tap on the lock you would like to recalibrate.
    *   Scroll down and tap **Calibrate Lock**.
    *   Follow in-app recalibration instructions
