The August Smart Lock can be fitted to an existing lock without changing the deadbolt or needing a different set of keys. Renters can install an August Smart Lock on the door to their rental given the following:

1.  The existing [deadbolt is compatible](https://support.august.com/deadbolt-compatibility-list-rkzJDLyR_G)
2.  Your rental agreement does not stipulate otherwise

PLEASE NOTE: Keep the thumb turn from your existing deadbolt after installing your August Smart Lock. In the event that you move, it is likely that you will take your August Smart Lock with you. Be sure to reinstall the thumb turn after removing your August Smart Lock when you move.
