Doorbell Cam Installation - No-Spacer Flush Installation

Note: This article includes instructions for installing the Doorbell Cam without the included wedge or spacer. This installation method will not work for all physical setup scenarios.

Only attempt this installation method if you:
  • Wish your camera to point straight ahead
  • Have a large hole in the wall where your doorbell is located
1. Test your existing doorbell.

Confirm that your existing doorbell works by pressing it.  This might sound obvious, but it never hurts to double check!

August Doorbell Cam will only work properly when installed onto a working 16-24 volt wired doorbell system.

2. Turn off power to the doorbell.

Turn off the circuit breaker or fuse that your doorbell is connected to, then verify that the power has been turned off by pressing the doorbell button again—you should not hear your doorbell chime this time.

3. Remove your existing doorbell.

Loosen the screws holding your existing doorbell in place and gently remove the hardware from the wall. You will need to unfasten any wires attached to the existing doorbell before completely removing it.

Make sure you’ve removed any spare paint, adhesive or other debris near your doorbell so that your surface is as flat as possible.

Once your doorbell has been completely removed, you should be left with two exposed wires coming from the wall.

4. Make sure the wiring will fit into your wall.

Without the wedge or spacer, all excess wiring and connectors will need to fit into the hole in your wall that your doorbell wiring is coming out of. Examine the included dolphin connectors (you'll be using 2 of them), the wiring coming from your wall, and the two wires connected to the back of your mounting plate.

It is recommended that the hole in your wall be at least 2" deep and at least 1" wide. This will keep the dolphin connectors from getting stuck inside the hole in case there are issues and you need to remove or reset them.

If your hole is smaller than this, please strongly consider using the spacer-based installation method.

5. Remove the spacer from the mounting plate.

Remove the three screws that hold the mounting plate to the spacer and set the screws and spacer to the side.

6. Mark holes for drilling.

Take the mounting plate and hold it flat against the wall where you want to place your August Doorbell Cam—you’ll want to align it so that the large center hole sits over the existing wiring.

Make sure the level on the mounting plate is aligned, then take a pencil, ballpoint pen or marker and press it firmly into the center of each of the three holes in the mounting plate to mark the wall.

7. Drill the holes.

Drill holes into the three spots you marked on your surface. Use the drill bit type and size given to you in the Installation Checklist.

A full chart is provided below for reference.

8.  (If required)  Insert anchors into wall.

Some surface types require the use of anchors. Check the chart above and see if anchors are required for your surface type.

If required for your surface, take three of the included anchors from the August Doorbell Cam package and use a hammer to gently tap them into the drilled holes.

9.  Attach wiring using blue dolphin connectors.

Using your fingers, press the end of one of your existing doorbell wires (either doorbell wire is fine!) against the one of the wires from the mounting plate. Make sure the wires are flush with your fingers so that they are pointing in the same direction.

Next, insert the two wires you’re holding into the wider-sized opening of one of the dolphin connectors.

Using your pliers or a crimping tool, crimp the dolphin connector very hard, starting at the top of the connector and working your way down. Once the two wires are securely connected, repeat this process for the other two wires.

10. Insert wiring into the hole in the wall.

Carefully place the attached wiring into the hole in the wall. It's important to fit all of the wiring inside.

11. Apply duct seal putty.

A small bag of duct seal putty is included in your package. This is intended to protect the inside of your wall from the elements.

Tear open the small bag containing the duct seal putty. Press some or all of the putty over and around the hole in your wall that your wiring is coming out of, so that the putty is flat against the wall and the hole is completely covered.

12. Screw spacer into the wall.

Firmly place the mounting plate over the holes you drilled into the wall. Then take three of the included longer 3/4” screws and screw them into the holes with a Phillips screwdriver.

13. Mount your Doorbell Cam.

Align the Doorbell Cam over the top lip of the mounting plate, then push the bottom firmly into the mounting plate until the Doorbell Cam snaps in place.

14. Tighten the fastening screw.

Insert the included hex wrench into the small hole on the bottom of the Doorbell Cam. Turn to your left to tighten (this is the opposite of how you’d normally tighten a screw).

15. Restore power to your doorbell.

You should now restore power to your doorbell.

16. Test your Doorbell Cam.

Now that your power is back on, you should eventually see a green bell-shaped light on the front of your Doorbell Cam.

Press the large circular button on the front of the device - if it is wired correctly, you should hear your interior doorbell chime.

17. Allow your Doorbell Cam to charge for 30 minutes.

Your Doorbell Cam has an internal battery that is needed to complete setup and stream video. To ensure that the battery is sufficiently charged, please leave your Doorbell Cam connected to power for 30 minutes before continuing to the next step.

18. Remove your Doorbell Cam from the wall and place it directly next to your Wi-Fi router.

Now that you’ve powered on the Doorbell Cam and confirmed it is wired correctly, the final step is to set it up using the August app.

To ensure that Wi-Fi setup goes as smoothly as possible, remove the Doorbell Cam from the wedge by pulling up and out from the bottom, then place the Doorbell Cam directly next to your Wi-Fi router.

The internal battery will keep the Doorbell Cam powered on while you install the August app and complete the in-app setup steps.

19. Use the August app to complete setup.

To set up your Doorbell Cam, select “Set Up a Doorbell Cam” (iOS) or "Set up a new Device" (Android) from the main menu of the August app and follow the instructions.

20. When the Doorbell Cam powers off during setup, re-mount it to the wall.

During setup in the August app the Doorbell Cam will download and update and then power off. To complete setup, re-mount your Doorbell Cam onto the wedge and wait for it to come back online.

21. Secure Your Doorbell Cam.

Once you’ve successfully set up the Doorbell Cam with the August app, and have tried a few calls and are confident that your performance and connection speed is good, it’s time to secure the Doorbell Cam.

To do this, insert the included hex wrench into the small hole on the bottom of the Doorbell Cam. Carefully and gently turn to your left two or three full revolutions to tighten (note that this is the opposite direction of how you’d tighten a normal screw). It is normal to not feel resistance or a stopping point when turning.
