Doorbell Cam and Smart Keypad - Side-By-Side Dual Installation

Note: This article includes instructions for installing the Doorbell Cam and Smart Keypad side-by-side facing straight ahead. If you need to point your Doorbell Cam at an angle to see visitors at the door, you should use the wedge-based installation method instead, and to then install the Smart Keypad next to the flush side of the Doorbell Cam. You’ll have a few parts left over at the end of installation, including spare dolphin connectors and the Doorbell Cam wedge.

1. Test your doorbell.

Confirm that your existing doorbell works by pressing it. This might sound obvious, but it never hurts to double-check!

August Doorbell Cam will only work properly when installed onto a working 16-24 volt wired doorbell system.

2. Turn off power to doorbell.

Turn off the circuit breaker or fuse that your doorbell is connected to, then verify that the power has been turned off by pressing the doorbell button again—you should not hear your doorbell chime this time.

3. Remove your existing doorbell.

Loosen the screws holding your existing doorbell in place and gently remove the hardware from the wall.  You will need to unfasten any wires attached to the existing doorbell before completely removing it.

Make sure you've removed any spare paint, adhesive or other debris near your doorbell so that your surface is as flat as possible.

Once your doorbell has been completely removed, you should be left with two exposed wires coming from the wall.

4. Connect the keypad spacer.

Take the Smart Keypad spacer (located in the Doorbell Cam package) and snap it into the the groove on the back left or back right of your Doorbell Cam spacer (depending on your installation preference).

5. Mark holes for drilling.

Take the combined spacers and hold them flat against the wall where you want to place your August Doorbell Cam—you’ll want to align them so that the large center hole sits over the existing wiring.

Check the level on the mounting plate to make sure it is in the correct position. Then take a pencil, ballpoint pen or marker and press it firmly into the center of each of the four holes in the spacer to mark the wall.

6. Drill the holes.

Drill holes into the six spots you marked on your surface.

Use the drill bit type and size given to you in the Installation Checklist. A full chart is provided below for reference.

7. (If required) Insert anchors into wall.

Some surface types require the use of anchors.  Check the chart above and see if anchors are required for your surface type.

If required for your surface, take the four included anchors from the August Doorbell Cam package, AND the two anchors from the August Smart Keypad package, and use a hammer to gently tap all six of them into the drilled holes.

8. Attach wiring using dolphin connectors.

Using your fingers, press the end of one of your existing doorbell wires (either doorbell wire is fine!) against the one of the wires from the mounting plate. Make the wires are flush and pointing in the same direction.

Next, insert the two wires you’re holding into the wider opening of one of the dolphin connectors.

Using your pliers or a crimping tool, crimp the dolphin connector very hard, starting at the top of the connector and working your way down. Once the two wires are securely connected, repeat this process for the other two wires.

9. Apply duct seal putty.

A small bag of duct seal putty is included in your package. This is intended to protect the inside of your wall from the elements.

Tear open the small bag containing the duct seal putty. Press some or all of the putty over and around the hole in your wall that your wiring is coming out of, so that the putty is flat against the wall and the hole is completely covered.

10. Insert wiring into the Doorbell Cam spacer.

Carefully place the connected wires into the slots on the back of the Doorbell Cam spacer and press until the wiring sits completely flush inside.

11. Remove back of keypad.

Take your August Smart Keypad out of its package. Depress the tab on the back of the keypad and remove the back panel.

12. Screw spacers and keypad backing into the wall. While continuing to hold the wiring in place, firmly place the spacer over the weather shield so that the screw holes line up with the holes you drilled into the wall.

Next, take the keypad back panel and, with the battery tab facing down, snap it into the two holes of the keypad spacer.

Finally, take the four included 3/4” screws, plus the two screws included in the Smart Keypad packaging, and use a Phillips screwdriver to screw the spacers to the wall. (Note that you’ll be poking through the rubber stoppers on the keypad backing while screwing it into the wall - this is by design.)

13. Mount the Doorbell Cam.

Before you mount the Doorbell Cam, examine the front of the mounting plate and make sure the security screw is in the right place. If the screw is sticking out of the bottom of the mounting plate, use the included hex wrench to adjust it.

After you've checked the security screw, align the Doorbell Cam over the top lip of the mounting plate, then push the bottom firmly into the mounting plate until the Doorbell Cam snaps in place.

Note: There will be a small gap between the spacer and the back of the Doorbell Cam - this is by design.

14. Mount the Smart Keypad.

Remove the battery tab from the inside of the keypad. Hook the top of the keypad onto the top of the back panel, rocking it down to the bottom until you hear a click.

Note: There will be a small gap between the spacer and the back of the Doorbell Cam - this is by design.

15. Restore power to the doorbell.

You should now restore power to your doorbell.

16. Test your doorbell chime.

Now that your power is back on, you should see a green bell-shaped light on the front of your Doorbell Cam.

Press the large circular button on the front of the device - if everything is wired correctly, you should hear your interior doorbell chime.

17. Allow your Doorbell Cam to charge for 30 minutes.

Your Doorbell Cam has an internal battery that is needed to complete setup and stream video. To ensure that the battery is sufficiently charged, please leave your Doorbell Cam connected to power for 30 minutes before continuing to the next step.

18. Remove your Doorbell Cam from the wall and place it directly next to your Wi-Fi router.

Now that you’ve powered on the Smart Keypad and Doorbell Cam, the final step is to set it up using the August app.

To ensure that Wi-Fi setup of your Doorbell Cam goes as smoothly as possible, remove the Doorbell Cam from the wedge by pulling up and out from the bottom, then place the Doorbell Cam directly next to your Wi-Fi router.

The internal battery will keep the Doorbell Cam powered on while you install the August app and complete the in-app setup steps.

19. Use the August app to complete setup.

To set up your Doorbell Cam, select “Set Up a Doorbell Cam” (iOS) or "Set up a new Device" (Android) from the main menu of the August app and follow the instructions.

To set up your Smart Keypad, go to the lock settings screen of the lock you're connecting it to and select "Set up a Smart Keypad."

20. After app setup is complete, re-mount Doorbell Cam.

After you've completed setup in the August app, re-mount your Doorbell Cam onto the spacer.

21. Secure your Doorbell Cam.

Once you’ve successfully set up the Doorbell Cam with the August app, and have tried a few calls and are confident that your performance and connection speed is good, it’s time to secure the Doorbell Cam.

To do this, insert the included hex wrench into the small hole on the bottom of the Doorbell Cam. Carefully and gently turn to your left two or three full revolutions to tighten (note that this is the opposite direction of how you’d tighten a normal screw). It is normal to not feel resistance or a stopping point when turning.
